The church is called to communicate God's love and acceptance through ministries of hospitality and welcoming, providing a church-home environment, information-sharing processes, and interpersonal relationship opportunities that will be perceived by strangers as inclusive, inviting, and sincere. Size is not the issue in this mission, although many congregations use size as an excuse. The author discusses how this spirit leads the preacher to open up her or his private world to the stranger.  Sermon discussion groups, interviews, and journal writing were used to uncover what is helpful and what is not helpful when preaching among people who are not connected by common history or tradition, nor by ties of friendship of family.
