My intention in this thesis is to combine expressionistic imagery with African American celebrative preaching.  Most Swedish sermons are cognitive and didactic and without celebration.  Preachers tend to concentrate more on law than gospel.  After such a sermon there might be some quiet time for reflection.  Through imaginative expressionistic celebrative preaching I will bring to Swedish preaching color and joy, which will help the listener experience the assurance of grace.  In this thesis I have defined expressionistic preaching and described the African American celebrative sermon and its theology.  I have also presented imaginative homiletics and its theology and presented a psychological model of interpretation of the imaginary and the mystic experience. In my thesis I have made a descriptive study of the effects in the listeners after an expressionistic celebrative sermon and described the problems with celebration in a Swedish context and given a psychological explanation for the absence of instantaneous celebration.  My conclusions are: The expressionistic celebrative sermon is a colorful and positive experience.  Swedish listeners experience the assurance of grace, but they don't celebrate as a group.  Celebration is expressed differently in the African American context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133300496007168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:05.942Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:26:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5a1f11e-8ccc-488c-bfd1-0a5c3ee42c88","accessControl_ssim":["49f84408-52eb-40f0-b363-5d1437fa621c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["What do body mind and spirit in community have to do with preaching?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["48e4eb7c-3f1d-4f9a-98f3-48c5aab92473"],"hasLease_ssim":["23f84fc3-ff08-41b8-9425-374fe552b0c8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy V Olson"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Pamela Challis"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Health and hygiene","Mind and body","Holistic medicine"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis proposes a direct correlation between the preacher's health in body, mind, and spirit and the effectiveness of preaching. As the author recognized a growing spiritual maturity in his own life, he sought to ascertain if and how this was identifiable in the preaching event. The author found a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual maturity of the preacher and preaching. The implication of my work is that preaching needs to focus on preaching styles that are didactic, narrative, and a combination of both so that seekers might come to know the biblical witness that declares God is seeking after us all."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133488903094272,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:05.622Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:12:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:28:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e26cce97-ae70-41a1-bf7c-17e16e6a7504","accessControl_ssim":["34a11a89-429a-4a04-8133-5c4c48c4238b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["I know something you don't know: preaching to a congregation in transition when you yourself are in transition"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:12:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:36:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e51144cb-372d-4464-8c44-37c6e13b0d76"],"hasLease_ssim":["202b587a-99ae-440d-96ae-944c7cac546e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig A Satterlee"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gail S Hermodson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Clergy","Laity","Change--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The preacher who leads a congregation through a pastoral transition must tend to her own experience of the transition in order to preach comfort and hope and to inspire courage and boldness in the midst of change. A pastor's identity informs how a preacher witnesses to the Word of God. Using The Witness of Preaching by Thomas G. Long, I discuss the various images he used to illustrate the roles of preachers: the herald, the paster, the storyteller/poet, and finally, the witness. I have drawn upon my own experiences as a child raised in the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod and how I moved from a  theology based in fear to a theology based in grace. As a secondary discourse I draw on Edwin H. Friedman's A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix. Friedman uses the term 'non-anxious' and 'well-differentiated' to define these aspects of leadership; throughout this thesis I discuss what it means to become a leader and bear witness to God's Word as a preacher."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133844493041665,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:44.739Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":212,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Alfred J Lewensten","hits":1,"label":"Alfred J Lewensten"},{"value":"Anders J Ekhem","hits":1,"label":"Anders J Ekhem"},{"value":"Andrea L Walker","hits":1,"label":"Andrea L Walker"},{"value":"Ann E Schmid","hits":1,"label":"Ann E Schmid"},{"value":"Ann-Katrin Bosbach","hits":1,"label":"Ann-Katrin Bosbach"},{"value":"Annamma Nainan Mathew","hits":1,"label":"Annamma Nainan Mathew"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Tests and measurements in religion","hits":4,"label":"Tests and measurements in religion"},{"value":"Church and community","hits":3,"label":"Church and community"},{"value":"Sermon preparation","hits":3,"label":"Sermon preparation"},{"value":"Theology, Contextual","hits":3,"label":"Theology, Contextual"},{"value":"Clergy--Performance standards","hits":2,"label":"Clergy--Performance standards"},{"value":"Bible in literature","hits":1,"label":"Bible in literature"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Preaching","hits":39,"label":"Preaching"},{"value":"Lutheran preaching","hits":19,"label":"Lutheran preaching"},{"value":"Preaching--Study and teaching","hits":15,"label":"Preaching--Study and teaching"},{"value":"Clergy","hits":14,"label":"Clergy"},{"value":"Evangelistic work","hits":10,"label":"Evangelistic work"},{"value":"Congregations","hits":9,"label":"Congregations"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":2,"label":"United States"},{"value":"Arizona--Tucson","hits":1,"label":"Arizona--Tucson"},{"value":"Canada","hits":1,"label":"Canada"},{"value":"Japan","hits":1,"label":"Japan"},{"value":"Korea","hits":1,"label":"Korea"},{"value":"Nigeria","hits":1,"label":"Nigeria"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":213,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":213,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":213,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1995","hits":23,"label":"1995"},{"value":"1992","hits":20,"label":"1992"},{"value":"1988","hits":14,"label":"1988"},{"value":"1997","hits":14,"label":"1997"},{"value":"1998","hits":12,"label":"1998"},{"value":"1993","hits":11,"label":"1993"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":213,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":213,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":213,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":213,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":2,"next_page":3,"prev_page":1,"total_pages":22,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":10,"total_count":213,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false}}}
