However, the author discovered that switching to a method geared to predominantly postmodern hearers can leave more traditional hearers feeling 'left behind.' Over the sermons in this project he explored postmodern preaching methods, but also checked in with more traditional hearers. Data was gathered by survey and interviews in a group setting. For small churches, there are ways that we can preach to new generations so that none are 'lost' or 'left behind.' This thesis discusses variety in preaching styles as a way to be inclusive for all those worshiping in smaller congregations. The thesis promotes postmodern preaching methods to reach younger members, while advocating for variety in preaching styles that take into account the variety among In my paper I show how lay leadership understands their role is crucial to the living out of Christian mission within a congregation. When a congregation's leaders become distracted by other issues the direction of ministry can easily be derailed. This can lead the congregation away from the purpose of Christian mission. By keeping lay leadership, and thereby the entire congregation, focused on mission, God's will in the world can be carried out. 2. It is of paramount importance to help keep the congregation focused on the mission of evangelism. 3. This paper is written using the style format contained in: Kate L. In the sermons attached, preached during the fall of 2004 in a rural congregation on the west coast of Sweden, I have tried to use specific concrete details, as a means to convey God's love. During the process, much of the focus moved, from the question of using details in general, to the more specific question of how to convey grace. It became very clear to me, how easy it is to be specific and concrete in describing the law, or the problems in this world, and how difficult it is to be concrete as to grace and God's presence. Very often that part is expressed more in abstractions and principals, by way of which you risk to leave people with a vivid experience of the law, and a sense of despair, as God's intervention seems so weak. The conclusion of the thesis is that it is utterly important for the preaching, to move closer. Closer to the phenomena I describe, to the deep experiences of life, in general, and in my own life--when I do that as a preacher, it is possible to find words to convey God's grace in a concrete way."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133823158714369,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:24.393Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:04:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d820bb18-e6b6-46c7-95cc-dd0564ad400e","accessControl_ssim":["bc6e910c-bffa-47d9-9759-7d7e8cec307d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching the good news of sanctification the power of the gospel to change us"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:04:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:18:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e30e5cdd-8843-45db-9bc6-d177ffde91d7"],"hasLease_ssim":["5082cf1c-d2b6-4d17-a7e8-466380b8ede8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Connie M Kleingartner"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph W Hughes"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Sanctification--Biblical teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis demonstrates the validity and importance of expanding a congregation's understanding of God's grace to include the Good News of Sanctification, through the ministry of preaching in a Lutheran context. Through three sermons about difficult issues the author will illustrate how the sermon can have a meaning for this question. The thesis is that a sermon does make visible people who think they are invisible. The author focused on four aims when preaching sermons on invisible subjects in order to make them visible: (1) to make visible the reasons for bringing up subjects considered as invisible, (2) to understand and explain the underlying structures of the reasons to this invisibility, (3) to attain a Christian attitude towards the fear that people have to make invisible subjects visible, and change them into trust and faith, and (4) to work for a reorientation and a new way of thinking regarding the invisible questions that people for some reason may have."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133798080970752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:00.477Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:11:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:16:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0f589cec-9c69-49b6-9374-8d7c74fc3f3a","accessControl_ssim":["12c8b9c5-f5ab-4b1b-82ad-92730ba1e740"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Om hoppfulla predikningar för vuxna = Hopeful sermons for adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:11:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:33:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["77d72f37-e5f9-4adc-a102-80477b0b8d5b"],"hasLease_ssim":["46fd438f-5c5f-4816-a815-3bc5cfa13bfd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Bo Larsson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Johan Svedberg"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Lutheran preaching","Hope","Law and gospel"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Hopeful sermons for adults"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis deals with the issue of how to preach hope for people between the ages of 25 and 55 by using law and gospel, or trouble and grace, in the sermon.
