The congregation is multi-generational, traditional and yet open to change. This thesis challenges the preacher to consider what it means to preach purpose driven sermons. Further, it asks the question of whether or not the use of multimedia enhances the listener's sense of understanding God's purpose for their life. This project uses multiple feedback loops to demonstrate the congregation's awareness of its purpose and the impact the use of multimedia has in discerning its purpose and any growth therein. The implication of this work is that purpose driven preaching enhanced by multimedia can create a climate for change, leading to a renewed sense of purpose in the individual's life as well as the congregation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133949436624896,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:24.820Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:28:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e526ad15-6d7c-43e4-a9e5-50bddc4bc0c8","accessControl_ssim":["450d0937-9222-49b4-90ae-9cd1cf25e860"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Journey into the visual story: a case for using multimedia in preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:41:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6762db2d-52b5-419b-8d8e-0e8b5952dc63"],"hasLease_ssim":["15793ac7-1cac-499d-9659-bca8a8c9745a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig A Satterlee"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eric P Deffenbaugh"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching","Learning, Psychology of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis is to explore how using multimedia in preaching can affect the preacher. For the purposes of this paper, the use of multimedia is defined as: the use of projected images and video of popular films. The conviction of this thesis - that multimedia can have an overall positive effect on the preacher as well as the listeners of a sermon - is based on personal preaching experience, class work and reflection during a three year preaching project. The thesis explores and reflects on field experience as well as dialogue with several writers, including Richard Jensen and Thomas Troeger. The thesis builds on the work of Paul Tillich who identifies the human condition in terms of estrangement. This thesis suggests that use of multimedia can only illuminate the human condition, not provide the cure. However, due to changes in culture, multimedia may uniquely serve as a more effective tool for communicating the Gospel message, which indeed is the answer to estrangement. Included in the thesis are summary multimedia rules, which are the result of my preaching experience and study. These rules are intended to offer general findings that may be useful to other preachers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134015694045184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:28:28.009Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:21:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"658d52e2-8ad6-40c3-95b2-e09c5ee86573","accessControl_ssim":["1db33be8-dc48-4157-81f4-7bdf70723304"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching evangelism: empowering to invite by inviting to respond"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:06:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["127be505-23ae-4eab-9fe5-011f729d793f"],"hasLease_ssim":["b8e48618-8d2a-46b2-8c64-9b56431d78c7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Morris J Niedenthal"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John E Knutson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelistic work","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis asks will a congregation be empowered for outreach by preaching themes of evangelism coupled with an immediate opportunity to respond. The underlying conviction of this thesis--that listeners are always co-creators of meaning along with the preacher in any sermon event--is based upon data collected during a three-year preaching project, and upon the work of a number of contemporary homileticians. The main thesis builds on the work of Fred Craddock who viewed the purpose of the sermon as 'getting something heard.' Going a step beyond Craddock's work, this thesis suggests that 'getting something created' is a helpful way of defining the purpose of preaching when listeners in the consciousness of homileticians is a central part of this thesis, which then leads to the conclusions of this thesis, that humility, imagination, and a 'catalytic consciousness' are essential qualities of preaching in the postmodern period."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133760408780800,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:24.550Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:48:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8168d5be-cafa-4eb3-a9f9-4ccc58af9298","accessControl_ssim":["2f2c7cac-a8fc-4815-9dfd-2369a75c730a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for reconciliation: from table to world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:47:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:57:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b12ba264-7fd6-4c86-a77c-aa7db4d2a096"],"hasLease_ssim":["38de842a-4d38-4319-bf53-e1c10b5221ee"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig A Satterlee"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marion Wyvetta Bullock"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Diaries","Lord's Supper","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author studied preaching, intentionally linked with the sacrament of Holy Communion, to discover a preaching model that would create an experience for the hearers to be transformed and empowered to take the gift of forgiveness and the ministry of reconciliation into the world.
