It begins by contrasting individual psychology, family systems and group-as-a-whole perspectives on group dynamics in congregations, arguing that the latter offers the most resources.  It continues with a discussion of theological issues raised by group dynamics and a survey of major psychological theories. This survey focuses on Freudian, object relations, self psychology, general systems, field and group-as-a-whole theories. A survey tool was used to measure the attitudes of persons in five different congregations in western Perry County, Pennsylvania.  The congregations which were studied were United Church of Christ (2), United Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran.  The study also evaluated the data by age and gender indicators.  The overall study indicated a significant ecumenical openness in worship, fellowship, witness, and mission. Rural churches encounter particular dynamics as change and rapid transitional forces occur.  This research/action/reflection model examines one rural parish in-depth, and three other churches in moderate detail, as they move to address their transitional circumstances and position themselves for future ministry via a deliberate planning process.  Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision.
