While the emotional pain and trauma of divorce make many pastors reluctant to preach about it, Jesus makes clear God's intent for marriage as a lifelong covenant of fidelity. Lutherans properly approach divorce from the perspective of an 'evangelical ethic,' demanding a proper balance of Law and Gospel. Any sermon on divorce should be specific, biblically honest, and accessible. The project enlists church members in intentional involvement with sermons before, during, and after worship, individually and in groups. Participants prepare for a sermon, focus their listening with questions during the sermon, respond to the sermon in an experiential rather than homiletically critical way in small groups meeting with the preacher, and continue consideration of the sermon in journal questions for several days afterward. In testing this proposition with four groups--those who merely attend worship, those who read the lessons before worship, those who participate in Bible study on the lessons, those who participate in a sermon critique following worship--the project finds that relationships are enhanced when church members feel that they are taken seriously as part of the sermon process.
