The postmodern world is not an epoch but rather a set of understandings and sensibilities that fill the cracks in a modern world view.  The author used an upper middle congregation as the testing ground for the thesis. Preaching that is hierarchical, filled with imperatives, and lacking in dialogue no longer communicates in the changing context of the postmodern world. Preaching can be invitational through collaborative formation of sermons, through language that is intentionally invitational, and through presentation that is invitational in style. The thesis reviews studies on mainline decline and postmodernism.  It utilizes a radical understanding of the Pauline ecclesia as a community in which all relationships had to be renegotiated: 'neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female.'  The thesis draws on the author's experience in church development as a presbytery associate executive.
