The project was developed through a series of eight two-hour sessions which were designed to provide lay counselors with insight, information, and techniques from theology, psychology, and sociology.  To determine the effectiveness of such a program several methods of evaluation were used, including a pretest and posttest which were evaluated by a two-tailed t-test for correlated groups. Two control groups of 10 people and a training group of 15 were enlisted to participate in the training process.  The object of the project was to move the training group away from the low control group and toward the high control group.  The training strategy used a three pronged approach: students participate in weekly lectures; homework assignments; and experience with a variety of ongoing ministries. Seven persons participated in the nine-week study, the first two being didactic sessions that covered worship and preaching.  They then participated in a Lenten Bible study-seminar of the New Common Lectionary texts. From the study, the author gained insights for the sermon. Utilizing a control group, the author conducted a pre-test and post-test. Twelve to fifteen year old youth were invited to participate in eight two-hour sessions.  Four of the eight sessions also included parents of the youth. With basic training, a group of lay caregivers could fulfill the biblical injunction to encourage others, thereby relieving some of the counseling burden pastors now carry .  A group of twelve carefully selected members of Tiffany Fellowship Assembly of God were trained in specific caregiving skills around an 'encouraging' model of counseling.  An analysis of variance of the supervisors' ratings indicated a significant level (p\u003c.01) of increased caregiving skills in the participants.  additionally the caregivers perceived themselves as significantly more confident (p\u003c.05) in caregiving
