A survey instrument was created using The Baptist Faith and Message and a panel of experts who possessed a broad range of educational and practical experience. The survey consisted of eighty-eight statements to which participants indicated their agreement or disagreement. The results raised concern regarding the doctrinal knowledge of Baptists. The curriculum which was developed as a result of the research is intended to encourage an identity that is reflective of Southern Baptist doctrine. The project used member assimilation materials of responding Southern Baptist churches, as well as information gleaned from publications. The project enlists 16 students for nine one-hour training sessions and a tenth session for evaluation. These students examined Baptist concepts of soul competency, believers' church, clebration of ordinances, perseverance of the saints, priesthood of believers, autonomy of the local church, and cooperative effort.
