The author, therefore, sought for healthy models among growing churches in such settings and studied their common characteristics. Twenty-one possible growth dynamics were identified and eleven churches were studied to ascertain which of these dynamics were common to them and to what degree they might account for growth. Fifteen characteristics were found to contribute to the growth of churches and nine of these emerged as significant. Church leadership went through a self-evaluation and drew up a ten-year financial report.  They designed a questionnaire and used it to analyze change.  The minister delivered six sermons on financial stewardship.  Findings showed that attitudes did not generate the shortfall in giving.  The denomination sets goals too high.  Members gave generously to a variety of causes.  Leaders then guided small group discussions to encourage members, discuss allocation of funds, and make suggestions for the 1993 budget. Four main studies were included: the study of prayer's impact upon family evangelism; the effectiveness of having a 'family ties' sermon series and a family outreach Sunday; a look at some barriers to rural evangelism; and the effectiveness of specific training in household evangelism through a retreat format.
