The responses of my listeners showed that designing sermons according to the different spiritual types did make a difference.  Using the Holmes/Sager/Ware model of spiritual types can enhance the effectiveness of preaching and lead to measurable spiritual growth on the part of both preacher and listener.  The results of a first and second congregational religious life survey indicated measurable spiritual growth for all four spiritual types. Celebration in preaching depends on the preacher's capacity to fully personify the Word preached through content, method, experience, imagination and emotional liberation.  The author formed a Parish Project Group that worked with him to prepare and evaluate his sermons.  He surveyed members of his congregations and of other Seventh-day Adventist congregations.  The thesis concluded that greater emotional and imaginative homiletical development results in more effective, powerful, and persuasive preaching. This methodology pays particular attention to both the rational and emotional aspects of preaching and utilizes celebration as a culminating dynamic that brings these together and makes the sermon effective. Five sermons were preached using a particular African-American model for both preparation and proclamation that emphasized celebrating the Gospel.  Immediate responses were solicited from congregants using a sermon feedback form designed to gauge the emotional impact and effect on behavior the sermon had.  The reuslts revealed that this model does translate effectively into a non-black context where particular attention is paid to culturally congruent expressions of celebration. Ten sermons were preached using a 'celebrative' design modified by 'conversational' concerns.  Responses were solicited through open forum times as well as through a written feedback form. The results indicated that the topic doesn't get dealt with enough in many congregations, that parishioners are generally unhappy with the church's handling of the matter and that when the church does deal with it, it is greatly appreciated in the pews. A 'participant-observer' field method is used through the course of the study. A four-fold analysis (contextual, mechanical, organic, and symbolic) of a congregation's subculture aids the preacher in the work of ethnography.  The symbolic analysis is expanded to include seven congregational symbols readily accessible to the preacher.  The study utilizes story in reporting the findings that detail the congregation's unique world view, values, and ethos.  The study then explores the role of ethnography in sermon preparation and the preaching moment.  Members of the congregation participated in a parish project group to prepare and evaluate sermons.  Interventions were based on feedback from the project group, a congregational survey, and the effect of preaching on the congregation's vision for future ministries.
