The project initiates a homiletical method that utilizes research, criticism, movement and a dialectic approach to encourage congregational response and spiritual transformation.  The methodology applied reveals that while celebration has cultural traits depending upon context, it also has a biblical and theologically precedence and warrants being experienced by every Christian community.  This work aims to establish that there are spiritual benefits and advantages associated with both cognitive and emotive celebration.  'Let the Church Say Amen' is a comprehensive evaluation of Baptist beliefs and how the African American church celebrates history and identity through its preaching and worship experiences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127200591773696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:08.621Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:40:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b1c3e228-0682-468c-986c-e01f18ee77ef","accessControl_ssim":["1d544908-1961-4a61-9795-c48fee5573d6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prescriptive preaching: preaching to the new generation of black churchgoers"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:15:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["abe4e5de-9050-4422-8a46-0c1449fd1b88"],"hasLease_ssim":["97e5330f-cb30-427d-be95-2b877bbaa04c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alfloyd Butler"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Howard-John Wesley"],"publisher_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","African American churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There is a new generation of black churchgoers attending the new black church, a post-desegregation, pot-literate, post-Soul generation whose dynamics and sermonic expectations have also given birth to new homiletical methods. The goal of this project is to critically examine, define, and detail one of those new methods called 'Prescriptive Preaching' whose goal is to provide its listener with explicit and helpful actions, prescribed and exemplified in a specific biblical narrative, which empower and equip the listener to cope with a relevant life issue. This methodology is currently being successfully used in the preaching life of St. John's Congregational Church, a 1,300 member black church comprised mainly of this new generation of black churchgoers. Through reflection on the creation, delivery, and evaluation of eight project sermons, the integration of residency course work, and committed discussion on the same with St. John's members in a Parish Project Group this project seeks to discover and establish the guidelines, goals, theological, biblical, and homiletical foundations and exegesis, and preparatory process that informs the methodology of prescriptive preaching. The successful results of this project not only produce and present the entire methodology of prescriptive preaching but also disclose that prescriptive preaching is an effective and sensitive response to the dynamic changes and sermonic expectations of this new generation of black churchgoers that is rooted in the tradition of black preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127234578219008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:41.033Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:31:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:41:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"be31167e-4ce9-4981-982b-7d6d99ae7387","accessControl_ssim":["e434417b-cb07-4d5d-a1f4-1132d2479094"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Postmodern homiletics and authority in the African American preaching tradition"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:31:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:36:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["44aba041-53a5-4409-bbbc-2aa37ba2131d"],"hasLease_ssim":["ef2354c5-fa60-4bd2-bbc9-a62052ac491a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alfloyd Butler"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Howard A McLendon"],"publisher_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Authority--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The homiletical concern of this study is to test the postmodern homileticians' theories concerning authority for their relevance to the African American preaching experience.  This study describes the response of an African American Baptist congregation when given an opportunity to compare and contrast the preaching of the new and postmodern homiletic which is inductive, narrative, and non-authoritarian, to the preaching tradition of the African American church, which is largely deductive and authoritarian.  The most important conclusion reached in this study is that the major determinant in sermonic satisfaction was not an issue of form.  Deductive versus inductive or authoritarian versus non-authoritarian formats were less important to listeners if they felt connected to the sermon as a result of finding themselves and their life situations in the sermonic discourse."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127267380822016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:41:12.316Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Evan C Hines","hits":1,"label":"Evan C Hines"},{"value":"Howard A McLendon","hits":1,"label":"Howard A McLendon"},{"value":"Howard-John Wesley","hits":1,"label":"Howard-John Wesley"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"African American preaching","hits":3,"label":"African American preaching"},{"value":"African American churches","hits":1,"label":"African American churches"},{"value":"Authority--Religious aspects","hits":1,"label":"Authority--Religious aspects"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":3,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":3,"label":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1999","hits":1,"label":"1999"},{"value":"2003","hits":1,"label":"2003"},{"value":"2005","hits":1,"label":"2005"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":3,"label":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":3,"label":"Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":3,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
