The author investigated the developmental theories of Erikson, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Fowler, Perry, and Parks.  The theological/biblical background focused on biblical stories, incarnational presence, personal narrative, human sexuality, prayer, creation-centered spirituality, and process, liberation, and feminist theologies.  As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson. As the spiritual direction coincides with individualism, there exists the potential for a profound conversion experience.  The method of research was the use of case study material from four spiritual directees.  There was a convergence of material from interpersonal relationships, relationship with God, and Jungian insights into the interior life.  The Jungian material included use of symbols, dreams, typology, journal keeping, active imagination, and rituals.
