Congregation members attended a community development conference, participated in small group book studies, and engaged with a blog focused on an empowerment model of mission ministries. These activities prompted small but significant changes to existing ministries. Floresville UMC has a vast reservoir of elderly members who have talents, knowledge, wisdom, and experience which are not being used for lay pastoral ministry. Resourcing their ministry is the challenge.  Taped interviews, personal visits, survey instruments, influence statements and reminiscings of the doctoral candidate undergird the continuity and personal meaning theories in this gerontological research. The practicum was developed over a twelve-week period of time.  This is an intensive laity involvement project.  Three committees of twenty lay people from Christ Church Dallas became involved in examining a national corporation whose AIDS program was a benefit to the community, helping HIV/AIDS victims through AIDS Interfaith, Inc, and working directly with an emergency shelter for abused and runaway teenagers. Although the main goal was to develop a theology of social responsibility, the laity and minister became actively committed to a ministry of compassion dealing with local injustices. The goal of the practicum was to develop a plan for recruiting and training lay leaders in the local church that could help solve the problem by providing a reservoir of trained and willing persons adequate to meet the needs of that church. The author worked with a local church in developing and using a leadership plan that was repeated for four years. Evaluations and observations indicated that the plan did make a significant difference in the availability of lay leadership. Through the use of personal interviews, conversations, and questionnaires, he discovers that the participants feel they have grown in their qualifications for ministry.  They acknowledge that the program helps them to pray more sincerely, to deal constructively with conflict and to develop leadership skills for ministry. It uses an educational approach to enable laity to take part in the ministry of evangelism. The researcher participates in a local church program of the 'Evangelism Explosion' ministry and attends a leadership clinic sponsored by 'Evangelism Explosion' to test ways of equipping laity for their ministry.  He concludes that teaching laity motives and helping recruit laity for ministry is possible in Indonesia.  Teaching must deal with believing, trusting, and doing.  The approach must be task oriented.
