The project involves approximately 200 adults in study of three different approaches to mission.  This five-week study, conducted in the Sunday School, produced the raw material for a congregational mission statement that was adopted by the administrative board.  The process also involved many church members in actual mission projects. An eight-member study team, along with the author, listened to recorded interviews of church members telling of their relationship with the church.  Listening for particular narrative and symbolic elements within these discourses, the study team identified three distinct congregations within the one church that is held together by a strong corporate affinity toward 'open' communion. Nine long-range goals and eight pastoral leadership skills were developed and presented to the congregation at a church conference. The practicum was conducted over a five-month period, being focused in the work of a ten-member task force.  After an initial phase of spiritual preparation, task force members were encouraged to define the congregation's 'ideal' mission through a modification of Richard Broholm's 'envisioning process.'  Congregational convocations helped the group refine its work for final presentation to the official church council.  Research hints at the value of a mission statement, management by objective, and the envisioning process in church administration. The writer presents both theological and educational theory as the basis for the thesis.  He participated in a congregation involved in an extensive program of social service and taught two groups concerning the nature and mission of the church.  The purpose of the classes was to help members develop more understanding of the church in general and of the outreach program of their own congregation in particular.  The writer hoped to encourage class members toward more intentional church membership (discipleship).  There was some evidence that greater understanding did occur; the follow-up of the teaching did not provide opportunity to observe whether more intentional membership resulted.
