Since very few helpful models or institutions are likely to be available, the church, through the local congregation, must be able to offer a viable ministry of reconciliation.  This project focuses first on an analysis of the circumstances which presently are contributing to the pain and separation. Secondly, it attempts to build a practical theology where belief and practice are mutually independent. While working with divorced people the author discovered one theme that is common to nearly all divorce situations, the theme of loneliness.  To address the theme of loneliness he modeled his procedure after William B Ogleby Jr's book Biblical themes for pastoral care. Oglesby underscores the importance of using the biblical story to intersect life themes. There are observed attitude and behavioral changes for both clients and non-clients. Hoping and waiting are biblical themes which suggest that separated families experience varying degrees of suffering. Appropriate training in this dimension of ministry will help them to relate better to parishioners on a variety of levels, to mainain objectivity as counselors and to avoid pitfalls in their counseling ministry.  One forum where pastoral counselng can be very helpful is the Roman Catholic Catechumenate, reinstituted by the Second Vatican Council. This present study describes the manner in which such a program was designed and executed in a local parish. It begins with a critical assessment of the approaches of O. Hobard Mowrer and Jay E. Adams and proceeds to the contemporary proclamation of grace in preaching as well as in counseling, and takes issue corporally with both writers' views of Freudian psychoanalysis.  The project seeks to integrate a responsible concept of a doctrine of justification with Freudian psychoanalysis.
