Appropriate training in this dimension of ministry will help them to relate better to parishioners on a variety of levels, to mainain objectivity as counselors and to avoid pitfalls in their counseling ministry. One forum where pastoral counselng can be very helpful is the Roman Catholic Catechumenate, reinstituted by the Second Vatican Council. This present study describes the manner in which such a program was designed and executed in a local parish. Five case studies reveal the scope of the problems and issues which can complicate such an undertaking, and they further demonstrate how competent and adequate pastoral counseling can be very satisfying and rewarding for the catechumen and priest-counselor alike."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720599601283072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:08:32.547Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:20:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:30:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"08f5f595-78a7-4a30-b753-ef0023141d12","accessControl_ssim":["55c420be-fcd4-450f-946d-22d4a53a91b2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confirmation: a rite of initiation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:20:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:22:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["258e6061-bd31-4378-a9a1-0703b591ee4b"],"hasLease_ssim":["8e7916b5-7792-4923-be21-ca347589c319"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["L Howard Grimes"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Edwin Albright"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Grace (Theology)","Wesley, John, 1703-1791","Baptism--Methodist Church","Theology","Infant baptism","Confirmation--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of the practicum was to design a model for confirmation training where seventh grade boys and girls could be involved in total initiation processes where both grace and faith are supporting ingredients in the identity of the Christian. The author's basic assumption concerning the Korean immigrant congregation was that it needed to emphasize a holistic ministry of three perspectives: worship, service, and fellowship, with teaching considered a part of fellowship. The emphasis was to explore and test how the Bible and theology can be taught meaningfully to a Korean immigrant congregation. The result was that the participants obtained more biblical knowledge, more theological understanding, and a higher consciousness for coping with and adapting to American culture while keeping their Korean identity. It is recommended that those responsible for Korean immigrant congregations use this method."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127270704807936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:41:15.486Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:17:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:39:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b6facaa9-42a7-4348-a5f4-c091228db4e6","accessControl_ssim":["dee482a4-d0e1-4965-a3b4-28621737b51e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Faith-sharing groups as a means of inner city evangelism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:17:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:24:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5ce16a63-2f09-454d-847f-afb3ddf833f4"],"hasLease_ssim":["173c0e5a-09db-4653-ba46-37587227d003"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["David Lowes Watson"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Vaughn Willard Baker"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["City missions","Evangelistic work","Grace United Methodist Church (Dallas, Tex)","Christian gospel","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this practicum and project was two-fold: 1) to determine whether or not a declining inner-city church could do evangelism within its own parish, while its primary motive for outreach was institutional survival, and 2) to determine how effective small share groups could be in doing evangelism in this setting. The student worked in an inner-city church for two years during which three faith-sharing groups were established. Through repeated development of such groups, this method proved to be very effective in communicating the essentials of the gospel. The five categories were: 1) vivid retelling of a Biblical passage (usually a narrative), 2) retelling/updating of a Biblical parable, 3) 'baptizing' a secular story, 4) a sermon centered upon a single image, and 5) an original story (written or extemporaneous). Two sermons were preached in each category in worship services in Liberia, West Africa, where the author taught Bible and preaching courses. The use of the fourth category is discouraged. The others are affirmed by careful analysis.
