Centered on two congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, this qualitative multiple-case study explores how church plants and community-rooted ministries navigate questions of sustainability, leadership, legitimacy, and mission within contexts shaped by economic disenfranchisement, racial marginalization, and uneven institutional support.\r\n\r\nDrawing upon interviews, congregational narratives, theological reflection, and ecclesiological analysis, this study investigates the organizational, relational, and theological patterns that contribute to congregational continuity and resilience. Particular attention is given to the ways ministry within marginalized communities frequently operates through networks of relational trust, communal presence, shared responsibility, adaptability, and spiritual commitment rather than through institutional models typically associated with dominant church-growth paradigms.\r\n\r\nThe findings reveal that congregational sustainability within marginalized contexts cannot be adequately measured solely through traditional institutional metrics such as financial stability, numerical growth, or organizational scale. Instead, participating congregations demonstrated forms of ecclesial vitality rooted in relational ecosystems of care, interdependence, community memory, and grassroots leadership. The study further identifies tensions between dominant ecclesial assumptions and the lived realities of ministries serving marginalized communities, particularly regarding how legitimacy, effectiveness, and sustainability are defined and evaluated.\r\nThis dissertation argues that broader theological and institutional conversations surrounding church planting, sustainability, and leadership formation must become more attentive to the experiences and insights emerging from marginalized congregational contexts. By centering the voices and practices of underrepresented ministry communities, this research contributes to practical theology and ecclesiology through a more relational, contextually grounded understanding of church, mission, and congregational life.\r\n\r\n"],"abstract_tesim":["This qualitative multiple-case study examines how two Black congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania establish and sustain ecclesial life within socioeconomically marginalized contexts shaped by racial inequity, economic disenfranchisement, and uneven institutional support. Many churches point to certain scriptures to undergird and provide support for gender prejudice in the rejection of a woman’s call to ministry. This research project will consist of a quantitative and qualitative framework. I will investigate various scriptures used against women and other scriptures that provide evidence that God calls women to preach the gospel, and I will conduct interviews with mid- and late-career women clergy. I argue that some scriptures have been taken out of context to push a false narrative intended to silence a woman’s call to ministry, past and present. The results I hope to discover will show that through discussing causes and challenges that arise for female clergy due to gender prejudice and sharing the reflections of the call and experience in ministerial leadership from mid- and late-career women clergy, it will be possible to educate, identify important areas of support for, and encourage early-career female clergy to inform the development of a mentoring network across denominations. History serves as a valuable lesson from which women clergy can draw to aid themselves as they battle against gender prejudice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["plee@pts.edu"],"_version_":1831409213475127296,"timestamp":"2025-05-06T21:45:29.720Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-04T18:04:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-04T18:09:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a7e3a588-8b23-472a-af0f-1b3ea89cd99e","accessControl_ssim":["2b8e5bf7-a8eb-41f4-8030-af1a7e1b3f6f"],"depositor_ssim":["mwineinger@pts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["mwineinger@pts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Childless Couples: The High Cost of Infertility"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-04T18:04:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-04T18:09:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["73c58e13-5448-4fa8-8517-93585ed79ce0"],"hasLease_ssim":["75ce2240-1e81-4b18-8c2e-17c1eb7d8e3a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"format_tesim":["PDF"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Creative Writing and Public Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr. Ervin Dyer, PhD","R. The couple tries, unsuccessfully, to have children, leaving them helpless and hopeless. Subsequently, they perform the utmost act of trust - to let go and let God. They discover a community that believes bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. In this safe environment, they can share their pain. The stories explore theological avenues to identify and counter harmful myths and actions. Ultimately, this project celebrates God's vision of families with or without children. Based on a review of 122 sermons from paragons of black preaching (Proctor, Gardner, Hall, Ray, etc.), the author was able to establish that social activist preachers include specific dialectical polarities in their sermons with statistically significant greater frequency than those without Social Activism sermons. This observation was used to evaluate sermons from local preachers. Preachers from congregations that embraced social justice as an aspect of ministry demonstrated the same preference for dialectical polarities. While sermonic predictors were confirmed, it was also observed that even churches that embrace social justice as an aspect of ministry are not preaching Social Activism sermons. Cultural Survival sermons are the dominant type of sermons preached in black churches. The author provides several recommendations for how churches can include more Social Activism sermons in their preaching regime; so that churches would more effectively and fully embrace the pursuit of social justice as an aspect of ministry.
