This project defines a non-active member as one who chooses not to participate in the worship or mission of the church, yet retains membership in the body. Through personal interviews with twenty non-active members, the author uncovered the variety of reasons for their non-active status. Contrasting their responses, the biblical and traditional theological standards of discipleship and meaningful membership were examined. A group of coaches is trained, each coach is paired with a new Christian, and the pairs of covenant to meet together monthly for a year. Coaches also meet separately, monthly, for support. Research for the project focuses on three key questions: (1) What makes an effective coach? (2) What should a Christian know? and (3) What is a Lutheran Christian lifestyle? This project was given theological and biblical impetus through the study of I Corinthians 12. Asserting that God prescribes caring as a cure for diversity, the project attempted to teach the church to care and understand the identity of the people of God as a caring community.  Personal contact, sermons, classes and administrative plans all played a part.
