The role is commonly referred to as pastor, shepherd or teacher.  Ordained ministry often comes at the cost of emotional and physical turmoil in the life of a pastor.  This can result in ordained ministers questioning their abilities, their own personal success and even their call into ordained ministry.  In this project seven ministers are interviewed.  They reflect on their decisions to leave or remain in the role as an ordained minister. This paper's primary question is: from the perspective of the congregation has this co-pastoral approach to professional ministry been successful in attaining the goals and objectives intended when co-pastors were called to serve the congregation? This work examines the biblical and theological foundations of the professional relationship as well as the initial objectives of the congregation in developing this approach to pastoral leadership. This paper identifies aspects of symbolic and visionary pastoral leadership by examining biblical (Ephesians 4:1-16, Moses, David and Paul), historic (the life and writings of John Calvin and the PC(USA) vows for ordination) and contemporary concepts (including the writings of John Gardner). The project was carried out in the setting of a general hospital based alcoholic rehabilitation program.  A group, led by a hospital chaplain, was set up to help patients work steps three, four, and five which are the spiritual core steps of Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps. Fifteen pastors and twenty-eight parishioners were interviewed concerning pastoral visitation.  There are biblical and historical reasons for the pastor to visit parishioners to share the Christian faith and to give spiritual guidance.  The majority of the pastors interviewed visit in hospitals and homes where there is illness or crisis, but not routinely all parishioners.  Parishioners want this pastor to visit them regularly, but by appointment.  They want the visit to be social.
