In contrast, the academic field of Foresight and Futures Studies takes a much broader approach to decision-making that can lead to the future we hope will come to fruition. This research project will explore the initial steps necessary to broaden congregational perspectives around what the future church could look like. With the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity increasing from 15.0% in 2008 to 19.3% in 2012, there is a decline in ecclesiastical engagement amongst young adults, particularly Generation Z. SVUP’s ongoing increase in young adults amongst its membership sets the congregation apart. This project uncovers the role intergenerational Christian fellowship plays in young adults' ongoing faith development. This was accomplished through a series of teachings. An intergenerational class was the setting. The sessions became the rallying and coalescing catalyst for change. The results were phenomenal. Attitudes changed from passivity to activity, from apathy to passion and from lethargy to vitality. Age and race issues were resolved. This project defines a non-active member as one who chooses not to participate in the worship or mission of the church, yet retains membership in the body. Through personal interviews with twenty non-active members, the author uncovered the variety of reasons for their non-active status. Contrasting their responses, the biblical and traditional theological standards of discipleship and meaningful membership were examined. The people of St Paul's gained new insights into the nature of baptism and the role every adult member plays in helping parents and the congregational family fulfill the baptismal promises. The project involved in-depth interviews with church members who had experienced significant crises in their church. The responses fell into the catagories of: the church as community; memory; hope; aspects of the respondents' personalities; and pastoral leadership.  By far the most significant unifying force for these groups was the fellowship of the congregation.
