The author served as spiritual director for nine individuals over ten weeks as they engaged practices of prayer, silence, the Jesus Prayer, inner purification and detachment, and awareness of and insight into their thoughts. Evaluative methods included surveys, field notes, and participants' journals. The research project invited participants to take nature photographs and reflect on them with a scripture passage, prayer or devotional thought. Each participant presented their photos and spiritual reflections to a study group for discussion. The purpose of these groups was to nurture discernment in the lives of the participants.  By 'discernment,' we mean fostering an awareness of God working in our lives.  Members of the groups strove to assist each other in paying attention to God.  Nine people were trained to be leaders of the groups.  Five groups were formed incorporating twenty-seven participants.  As part of the project, a spiritual discernment handbook was developed by the author.  At the first meeting the participants were asked sixteen questions to describe their spiritual life and their practice of spiritual disciplines.  They were given the same questions at the conclusion of the experience, along with several essay type questions. Teaching those benefits as signs of Christ's presence, this project sought to encourage modernist people to apprehend and talk about their experience of Christ.  Class sessions primarily involved lecture and discussion.  The course also included daily scriptural readings and reflections on the gospel of Mark. As the priesthood of believers, spiritual friends encourage one another in spiritual growth, which is defined as the increase of each person's ability to consciously and deliberately cultivate a sense of God in her/his life and take responsibility for choices based on that experience of God.
