Centered on two congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, this qualitative multiple-case study explores how church plants and community-rooted ministries navigate questions of sustainability, leadership, legitimacy, and mission within contexts shaped by economic disenfranchisement, racial marginalization, and uneven institutional support.\r\n\r\nDrawing upon interviews, congregational narratives, theological reflection, and ecclesiological analysis, this study investigates the organizational, relational, and theological patterns that contribute to congregational continuity and resilience. Particular attention is given to the ways ministry within marginalized communities frequently operates through networks of relational trust, communal presence, shared responsibility, adaptability, and spiritual commitment rather than through institutional models typically associated with dominant church-growth paradigms.\r\n\r\nThe findings reveal that congregational sustainability within marginalized contexts cannot be adequately measured solely through traditional institutional metrics such as financial stability, numerical growth, or organizational scale. Instead, participating congregations demonstrated forms of ecclesial vitality rooted in relational ecosystems of care, interdependence, community memory, and grassroots leadership. The study further identifies tensions between dominant ecclesial assumptions and the lived realities of ministries serving marginalized communities, particularly regarding how legitimacy, effectiveness, and sustainability are defined and evaluated.\r\nThis dissertation argues that broader theological and institutional conversations surrounding church planting, sustainability, and leadership formation must become more attentive to the experiences and insights emerging from marginalized congregational contexts. By centering the voices and practices of underrepresented ministry communities, this research contributes to practical theology and ecclesiology through a more relational, contextually grounded understanding of church, mission, and congregational life.\r\n\r\n"],"abstract_tesim":["This qualitative multiple-case study examines how two Black congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania establish and sustain ecclesial life within socioeconomically marginalized contexts shaped by racial inequity, economic disenfranchisement, and uneven institutional support. The use of rhetorical criticism by Phyllis Trible enriches the discourse, providing ways a writer may create a literary sanctuary to allow others reconsider their spiritual heritage. This approach not only facilitates individual spiritual reflection but also fosters a broader dialogue about faith in the modern public square."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-NC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["gmostowski@pts.edu"],"_version_":1797406992953769984,"timestamp":"2024-04-26T14:14:45.309Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:14:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:45:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5786d0f-f58b-4568-8eee-45c3bbc918d1","accessControl_ssim":["cce010d1-9ac7-4fe8-ac40-cc1391660721"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["As a Hen Gathers Her Chicks:The Impact of Intergenerational Relationships on the Faith Development of Young Adults at Sunrise Valley United Presbyterian Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:14:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["45993c02-aa1e-48a5-b065-20df88c5e9b2"],"hasLease_ssim":["f3c069b7-9300-426a-8f2a-0714d1380925"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Hagley Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["Pennsylvania"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Laura Elizabeth Strauss"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community","Feminist theology"],"subject_tesim":["Commitment to the church","Bible. With the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity increasing from 15.0% in 2008 to 19.3% in 2012, there is a decline in ecclesiastical engagement amongst young adults, particularly Generation Z. SVUP’s ongoing increase in young adults amongst its membership sets the congregation apart. This project uncovers the role intergenerational Christian fellowship plays in young adults' ongoing faith development. This work contains a survey of trauma studies in the United States and its influence on theology, particularly Reformed theology. It also surveys several passages in the Gospel of Mark through a trauma-aware lens. John Calvin’s legacy is reconsidered through his own potentially traumatic circumstances. The project contains independent research on the impact of trauma-informed spiritual practices on the pastoral care capacities of nine pastoral leaders over the course of approximately six months.
