The Word of the holy God is preached and received to make a holy people. This is a clear Biblical expectation. Four passages serve to illustrate the consistent focus of scripture on the sanctification of God’s covenant people: Deut. 6, Matt. 5, Eph. 4, and 2 Pet. 1. The impact of the preaching of John Calvin in Geneva is explored to gauge its impact on the sanctification of the people sitting under the Word. The influence of the Consistory of Geneva is also examined to determine how they created an expectation of sanctification in that Reformed city.Themes in Walter Marshall’s work, The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, are summarized to enumerate the various theological strands which are woven together with our sanctification. Those themes are then used to also discover the degree to which more contemporary sources support a Biblical understanding of the place of sanctification in the Christian life. Lastly such themes are employed to provide a framework in which local churches can increase their emphasis on continual growth in holiness for all of the members of the church. Ideas for equipping the elders of the church to support this emphasis are detailed. The focus turns to discipling the members to see the importance of growing in holiness in a consistent way as they sit under the preached Word."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127373915095040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:42:53.915Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:12:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:28:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"636f7a6a-3688-4707-8b41-76a6795c2e08","accessControl_ssim":["e11847b8-b971-477d-a4b1-ff5b4898f377"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Recovering The Theology Of Union With Christ To Address Christian Identity Issues"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:12:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:02:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["afe9a2f1-fa8f-42ac-838d-7f424ded99e4"],"hasLease_ssim":["103bf88a-6805-4c10-94dc-735f29d177fb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S. This project seeks toreclaim union with Christ as the core of Christian identity and to develop a curriculum forteaching this concept. Psychologists consider the formation of personal identity to be the boundarymilestone to adulthood. A stable sense of identity provides a rootedness that allows aperson to weather the changes of his life, social network, and the world.Without a stable identity, the person may well look to the world to make sense of himself, leaving him vulnerable to the loudest voice of the day whether that is media, individuals,or government. Recent changes in society have made forming a stable identity far more difficultthan in previous generations. The mobility of society has removed the identity of place;the breakup of families has removed the identity of family; expanding horizons ofeducation and career have blurred class and occupational identities. The church is not immune to these difficulties. A personal identity is only as strong as the ideas and principles on which it is built. The concept of union with Christ gives believers a framework of identity based on who they are in Christ. In Christ, believers are given meaning and purpose as they join God’s mission of reconciliation. In union with Christ, the image of God damaged by sinis restored. This restores the believer to what he was created to be. This restorationprovides an identity which does not diminish individuality but instead allows believers tocelebrate their different giftedness within the framework of common spiritual union. Inrelationship with the Creator and grounded in truth, the believer is less susceptible to themanipulations and falsehoods of culture. Identity in Christ influences the believer’sunderstanding and relationship to every aspect of life."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721879397728256,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:28:53.056Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:03:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:28:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"db946db9-1e6e-4099-b455-887d02ce48b4","accessControl_ssim":["687af5aa-96bf-45f1-aef3-9f52ad349beb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Discipline Of Watching: Reclaiming A Necessary Outlook And Exercise For The Purity And Perseverance Of The Saints"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:03:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:24:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5bb69e54-394c-42f6-aaac-6f0e618fccd0"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae93eea8-6d37-466b-a344-385c9ee6304d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rod Culbertson D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lawrence Bowlin"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual formation","Pastoral theology","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The paper begins with an extensive survey of the Biblical call to watchfulness in the Old and New Testaments showing not only that it is a recurring theme in Scripture but that it is a foundational theme in the context of spiritual warfare from Genesis chapter three through Revelation chapter twenty, for as long as God’s people live in a fallen world. This theme is also plainly manifested throughout Church history and particularly so in the writings of the English Puritans. One would be hard pressed to find a single Puritan author who did not address this topic and that repeatedly as a matter of life or death in terms of one’s spirituality and the healthiness of a church overall. This project highlights some of the more prominent Puritan authors in how they exhorted their people to watch over their own hearts, to watch over their brothers in love, and to humbly receive the watchful care of their church elders. The call to watchfulness is then evaluated today in light of contemporary spiritual renewal movements and the reclamation of the spiritual disciplines, in the context of Christian counseling, and in church growth literature, all of which touch on this theme of watchfulness and seem to be moving in a direction of greater accountability in the normal Christian life. This project attempts to integrate the findings from these Scriptural, theological historical, and contemporary elements into a new model of ministry designed to equip the members of a church with the necessary tools to watch over their brothers’ hearts in addition to their own and to humbly receive the watchful care and correction of Christ’s undershepherds. These tools are in the form of sermons, scripts, and seminars."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130223016673280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:11.030Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
