Changes in imagery were measured after three hour workshops using secular consciousness-training (relaxation, visualization, and mental rehearsal) alone or with an equal period of spiritual exercises (meditation, contemplation, and prayer). Basic life experiences (centering, imaging, and anticipating) were defined, then discerned in world religions, secular psychology, Christian mysticism, and healing.  Substantial parallels were found between certain forms of relaxation, visualization, and mental rehearsal and particular ways of doing meditation, contemplation and prayer.
