Rural churches long for a former 'golden age;' such longing impedes their becoming vital churches today.  Exilic prophets spoke to the grief of the Exile and speak to today's rural churches in exile.  Rural churches can find new identity through grief counseling techniques.  The project applied grief counseling methods to eight declining rural churches.  The project demonstrates that grief is part of rural churches and grief counseling leads to new identity and renewed vitality. It used a case study method that observed ten spouses of deceased cancer patients.  The author planned and implemented the pilot project to meet the needs of the spouses.  He conducted five training sessions with three spouses and took each spouse to visit two other bereaved spouses.  The project included the trainees' views about the development of a lay grief counselor network. By supporting grieving adults, churches can help children deal with grief in a manner which can alleviate further distress.  The project evaluates the theological meaning of death and surveys psychological studies on the impact of death.  It reviews the means of responding to grieving children.  Special attention is focused on how churches can help through pastoral care by clergy and lay helpers, the funeral service, and Christian education. Volunteers were selected by their minister and trained to understand the dynamics of grief, to counsel, and to make referrals when their counseling skills were limited.  Part I explains the dynamics of grief.  Part II presents the training manual. This dissertation explains the nature of shock, its affect on family; discusses the value of funerals, and illustrates how the funeral message can be developed to aid the family in a therapeutic manner and be spiritually comforting.
