A historical, biblical and theological study of the doctrine of the image of God was conducted in order to undergird the concept of human worth as taught in Purkey's model.  The social and psychological foundations for the invitational model are also investigated.  A control group and an experimental group each consisting of twenty people were selected from the church.  The experimental group was taught Purkey's model.  Pre/post-tests were given to each group.  The post-test revealed that the experimental group had become more inviting. Hospitality, defined as a gracious openness toward church guests, was revealed as a major biblical theme.  The program included questionnaires to members, visitors, pastors, and special visitors who documented their experience of welcome.  The project's core was a workshop followed by project actions seeking to maximize the visitor's sense of welcome.  Focused interviews of participants assessed their growth. The concept of hospitality to strangers provided the biblical and theological foundation for this enterprise.  Questionnaires and interviews were used to determine the needs of church visitors, the effectiveness of ministries to these guests, and the influence upon church leaders participating in the exercise.
