Deacons' attitudes will be challenged through a survey of unchurched nonbelievers in the community. Deacons will examine biblical ministry mandates in a ten-week seminar. In the final two meetings, deacons will formulate plans for involving other church members in ministry, reflecting their changed attitudes and behavior in ministry. The project leader will enlist a cross-section of church members for interviews.  The project leader, under the supervision and guidance of a sociologist, will listen for images of the nature of the church.  He will preach a series of narrative sermons designed to undergird the biblical images of the nature of the church. The compelling images and metaphors in the sermon series will replace the non-biblical understandings of the nature of the church.  These sermons will create a biblical, prophetic, and positive view of the church, by that helping the church in its goal of improving assimilation.  Following the sermon series, the project leader will again interview the interviewees, under the supervision and guidance of the sociologist, to listen for changes in images and metaphors.
