A high rate of pastoral turnover and geographic isolation necessitate the training of lay preachers to meet this need.  Lay preachers can be effective if they understand the communication patterns of the traditional/oral listeners who occupy these pews.  This project equipped a group of laymen from a large urban church to preach in the small rural churches of Oklahoma.  The laymen were trained to understand and appreciate biblical narrative.  they learned basic storytelling skills.  They worked to construct and deliver sermons that respected the traditional/oral communication keys of stories, relationships, and proverbial sayings. There were two broad objectives that the project worked to attain. The first was that the church members would work to better understand and minister to the needs of its community. The second was to involve the community in helping to share the Gospel. Both goals were accomplished through the planning and implementation of a camp meeting.
