Seven persons were trained for nine weeks in caregiving skills, crisis recognition, theological backgrounds, and self-understanding.  Six sermons focused the congregation on the Christian's response to various human needs.  The project resulted in personal growth and self-awareness for those equipped as crisis caregivers.  The development of the crisis care team multiplied the ministry of the professional clergy. Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects.  Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources.  The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry.  As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church. The project was necessary because of both space and financial restrictions.  A task group was trained with a leadership training manual written by the author.  Participants in the training program were then enlisted to lead new adult small groups.  The project resulted in the establishment of several new groups. The project also explores the role of communication in ministry to those in grief. Research for the project included the exploration of relevant literature, the pastoral experience of the author, and analysis of crises encountered during training events. Incarnational witness was defined as a demonstration of the person and power of Jesus Christ through the personalities, actions, and words of believers in the context of the felt and real needs of unbelievers. Project participants identified needs in the community through demographic analysis, generalized characteristics, and personal interviews with community members.  As a result of this study participants crafted a needs-based and resource-related strategy.  This strategy was refined by dialogue with the church body.
