The project prepares and delivers sermon series on fasting as spiritual discipline, encouraging church members to respond. The goal of this project is to enable the church community to embrace biblical core values in the discovery of functional values which determine the vision for ministry in the local church. The project will involve the identification of core values on two levels of church leadership. First, the church staff will engage in the process of identifying core values in personal ministry as well as for the Christian community. Second, participants from the church body will be involved in identifying core values. The articulation of core values will lead to the development of a clearly defined vision for ministry. The project leader will lead the staff and congregation through the discovery process. The process will be accomplished through an off-campus retreat, seminar sessions, and a series of sermons on the biblical core values of Christian community. The main reason is that there are very few pastors and no lay Christians trained to provide such care. The goal of this project was to train laity through practical, experiential, and clinical methods to engage in effective hospital visitation. This goal was achieved by training laity to provide pastoral care for hospital patients. The author planned for participants to attend eight sessions totaling sixteen hours of training. In these meetings they received instruction and participated in group activities. The first six sessions focussed on a basic understanding of pastoral care, the nature of hospitalization, the personal identity as a pastoral caregiver, the guidelines for the hospital visit, a model of pastoral conversation, and writing and presenting a verbatim report. The participants made five hospital visits after the sixth session. Twelve lay people (hereafter called 'evangelists') will receive eight weeks of training. In weeks nine through twelve, they will leave during the two morning worship services to go door-to-door to share their faith, since many non-Christian people will be at home during this time. The evangelists will solicit prayer requests, promote Istrouma, and witness, and before the end of the worship service, one spokesperson will report back to the church via a cellular telephone. It is hoped the congregation will catch a vision for evangelism through hearing about the lives of real people live over the public address system. Then, the church will be encouraged to pray for those in need. In week thirteen, the project will be evaluated. Follow-up, not discussed herein, will happen in the days thereafter. This project will help the writer and the evangelists grow in their witnessing ability. Furthermore, the church will gain exposure and credibility in the community, perhaps leading to growth. The response to the problems will be practical application of the biblical principles of Christian social involvement. Specifically, an attempt will be made to lead an urban church in decline to become revitalized and to grow spiritually and numerically by developing and implementing an after-school ministry program. This program will address the spiritual, emotional, educational, and physical needs of elementary aged children in the Riverside area of Fort Worth, Texas. The children will be recruited from Oakhurst Elementary School in cooperation with the principal and the administration. A group of approximately twelve people will be led through an awareness and training program to help them see the need for and to equip them for a ministry of this kind.
