Following the example of Jesus and his disciples, they have also emphasized medical, agricultural, and educational ministries.  One area that has perhaps been neglected has been Christian counsel. This project develops teaching and resource materials to train a small group of Baptist ministers to deal effectively with the issue of polygamy. One of the most significant biblical texts pertaining to discipleship is the Sermon on the Mount. This project assists a small group of Christians to grow in knowledge and understanding of the Sermon on the Mount, demonstrating and applying this knowledge and understanding in their lives. This project produces a study guide to be used by group members in daily family instruction. Weekly learning activities involve entire families in discipleship, supplemented by a sermon series in the local church. They learn least and experience the poorest recall from expositional presentations and other literate styles.  Most literate Gospel presenters use expositional presentation formats when presenting the Gospel among oral communicators. This project employs four years of research and use of Chronological Bible Storying in cross-cultural settings by members of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board.  The project developed and tested a training module during a workshop in England in 1994. Fifteen newly elected deacons participated in in-depth training to gain better understanding of spiritual gifts and their use in deacon ministry, attending eleven classes as a part of the project.  The entire diaconate participated in a small portion of the project. The project involved academic study and research at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Hardin-Simmons University. The new deacons fully participated in the Deacon Training Class and are using their spiritual gifts in ministry at Pioneer Drive. Generation to Generation by Edwin Friedman is an important family systems resource for the study.  Instruments produced by XICOM facilitated leadership assessment.  On their genograms the participants indicated family themes, emotions, traumas, triangles, and leadership characteristics over three generations.  The four instruments aided the participants to identify leadership resources in their genograms and family systems. It is even more difficult in a congregation made up of members from the baby boomer and baby buster generations.  These individuals have an aversion to making commitments.  This project teaches deacons how to maintain involvement of baby boomers and baby busters in an effort to reduce the growing number of inactive church members.  The project begins with training of deacons over seven weeks.  Deacons then interview inactive members to determine what factors led to their reduced involvement.
