The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years. This was tested by questionnaires and discussion in a mainline congregation recently completing a three year program of public faith reaffirmation and membership renewal.  Data confirms the thesis and supports continuation of the program.  The study contributes to denominational discussion on baptism as sacrament of initiation to full membership and on the value of frequent renewals of the baptismal covenant.
