The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years. Their changes were compared with pre- and post-test questionnaires to the changes demonstrated by a random sample group from the congregation.  The program included components of mutual selection and commitment, building of community, voluntarily chosen disciplines, a body of content, use of action and reflection, integration of body, mind and spirit; and the use of time.
