Givens are the fragility of identity, assurance and authority, and concern about the loss of personhood, the integrity of difference, the abuse of power and the meaning of suffering. The Book of Jude is used as an example of dealing with Gnosticism's influence on the congregation. Then an historical analysis of Irenaeus's christology in his anti-Gnostic work shows the importance of affirming the deity of the historical Jesus when addressing Gnostic trends.
