How had such served the Church?  A Lay Diaconate has been trained and utilized in congregations of Southern Arizona for nearly three decades.  Its officeholders were locally trained, primarily by Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod pastors.  This project’s purpose, therefore, was to study that which was in place and to develop exportable teaching resources. Given the relative scarcity of this pastoral work the project began with a defense of its propriety. The project examines reasons for involuntary termination, the dynamics involved, and the possible conflicts between the pastor and the congregation. A course of study was written to be taught in ten lessons covering the following subjects: the mandate to evangelize, memorization, personal testimony, gospel content, commitment, pre-evangelism, handling objections, and follow up.  An accompanying teacher's manual was provided.  Teaching methodology included the use of an overhead projector, role playing, lecture, discussion, and small group activities. The major issue addressed was how life-situation preaching can be done in such a context.  The legitimacy of an evangelical use of life-situation preaching was established in Scritpure and church history.  Questionnaires were used to discover the most frequently occurring problems of members; sermons were prepared and delivered on the seven most common problems, including anxiety, anger and discouragement.  Members of the congregation evaluated each sermon.  Approximately twenty percent of them said they received help or sought out further counsel with the pastor.  Evening service attendance increased ten percent.
