A comprehensive summary of the biblical data revealed the importance of this practice, and formed the basis for its theology. To illustrate the need for self-talk and to cultivate its practice, a seven-week sermon series was delivered drawing from biblical data. The preaching of the Word effectively confirmed that our inner dialogue matters to God. All Christians are required to grow spiritually. In both Testaments, God revealed himself as a holy God, and commands that all his children be holy. Books and even courses on spiritual formation cannot, in and of themselves, produce spiritual transformation in believers' lives. Only the Holy Spirit can form and shape them into the image of Christ. With that in mind, the present project entailed the development of a course on spiritual formation at Faculté de Théologie Evangélique de l'Alliance Chrétienne (FATEAC). Eleven of these institutions are in North America.  The emergence of spiritual formation offices on each campus is a rather new development.  This project describes and critiques spiritual development programs at four Nazarene universities in North America.  The study explores the interaction between a Wesleyan understanding of sanctification and spiritual formation. Information gathered through open-ended interviews was used to determine what programs were most effective. A study of the biblical doctrine of the mind led to the conclusion that the mind is not merely the place of intellectual activity; it is the wellspring of moral behavior.  As such it must be renewed if transformation of life is to overcome conformity to the world.
