It arose from the author’s reflection on her own spiritual journey, from her professional experience as a psychotherapist, and from the observation that psychological barriers often impede spiritual progress. While the psychotherapeutic and spirituality literature often exist in separate silos, and the two professions tend to operate in different domains, the author contends that spiritual formation/direction and psychotherapy in combination are often what is needed to bring about Christlikeness. A psychospiritual model of Christian formation is presented that integrates insights from both domains with particular attention to the rich spiritual traditions of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic understandings of psychological wholeness and spiritual holiness. To test this integrated model, a field research project was carried out to explore the effect of an integrated, eight-session psychoeducational program with individuals whose spiritual lives were affected by trauma and unforgiveness. The findings of the study suggest that attachment theory and trauma-informed principles may help people move forward in the process of forgiveness and spiritual growth. The limitations of the study are discussed, and recommendations are made for further study on how to extend a psychospiritual approach to spiritual formation in the case of similar issues that present barriers to wholeness and spiritual transformation into the imago Christi."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133395512721408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:36.557Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:11:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5d935316-d87b-4aad-af49-8ab107223376","accessControl_ssim":["32bfbd7e-c0d1-4310-b02e-661e3239058b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Listening to God:The Key to Spiritual Formation for Salvationists and All People"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:11:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:52:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b5fd6bb1-b62a-43e5-ad64-5d0259496c81"],"hasLease_ssim":["aeddc91f-aa30-485a-80aa-6bfda5c790fa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Spiritual Formation"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Sarah Patterson D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["Canada"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. How do we communicate with God? How do we know what He is saying? Through the process of writing her spiritual autobiography during the COVID-19 pandemic, the researcher discovered that communication with God occurs when people 1) intentionally take time to listen to God, and 2) use the disruption of life as an occasion to contemplate their relationship with Him. Researching models of spiritual formation and looking at patterns in literature resulted in the creation of a five-part spiritual formation model of change. This model proposes that the ability to listen to God is a key aspect of spiritual formation. An action learning research project conducted with soldiers of The Salvation Army revealed that meeting biweekly one-on-one with a spiritual director to learn and engage in spiritual practices had a positive effect on the participants’ ability to listen to God. This portfolio shows that intentionally spending time listening to God aids in the spiritual formation of the listener and is the foundation of communicating with others about their relationship with God. "],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133535780732929,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:50.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:11:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8f6264ce-7284-4112-b8e4-2ee80f5871f4","accessControl_ssim":["26dded38-49f4-4851-9ff4-86806422176d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Method for Growing in Intimacy with the Triune God Through Knowing, Being and Doing."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:11:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:19:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ef0ea22e-caac-45b0-9014-c1d3c5dd1a50"],"hasLease_ssim":["5a68e1c4-bd6c-4149-bf5d-dec61bd7443f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Spiritual Formation"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Narry Santos Dr. Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["Canada"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The method is developed in three parts. The first part is a spiritual autobiography where the author describes his life in Christ: Seed (Life before Christ), Death (New Life in Christ), Rooted (Learning from Christ), Pruning (Suffering with Christ). The second part is a spiritual formation model exploring how we grow in maturity in Christ: we discover our true identity in relation to Christ (know), as we abide in Christ (be) by intentionally practicing spiritual disciplines, and over time, we bear the fruit of the Spirit in Christ (do). The third part is a research project that reproduces the knowing-being-doing model in the context of a spiritual direction relationship, where the participants are led to use their imagination in prayer. This will be explored through three avenues. The first is a spiritual autobiography describing the author’s own spiritual formation in response to the question: How will I know God’s voice? The author’s discernment of vocational call to spiritual direction and supervision will be shared. The second is through the development of a Trinitarian Spiritual Formation Model as informed by Trinitarian Spiritual Formation anchored in trinitarian theology. In the face of hybrid forms of spiritual direction, this understanding of spiritual formation will be applied to the question: What makes spiritual direction, spiritual direction? The third is through a field research project that attends to the spiritual formation of Tyndale graduate spiritual directors. The project is guided by the question: Does attending to the spiritual formation of directors through a contemplative evocative approach better equip them to discern a calling to the supervision of directors? This research confirms that a contemplative evocative approach toward spiritual formation is helpful for discerning whether or not directors are called to become supervisors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133616636428288,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:22:07.438Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:07:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5ebbc536-c167-4c6a-a085-be77cdacae18","accessControl_ssim":["17e955d0-85c0-47d3-b1ab-3f7c17a4a3e1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Venerable Doctor Maria del Pilar Gonzalez Gateman"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:07:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:55:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1177968a-47e6-41ed-8f8c-4d1ad1402e58"],"hasLease_ssim":["43a8033e-6523-4465-b72b-4f63228c13b4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Sarah Patterson D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Canada"],"resource_type_tesim":["Other Terminal Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Maria del Pilar Gateman"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual direction","Spiritual formation","Spiritual exercises","Leadership--Religious aspects","Spiritual life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The motivation behind all of my ministry has been to walk alongside people and help them know the God in Jesus that I have come to know and to whom I grow closer. As my life has drawn me toward leadership roles my interest became more focused on the formation of leadership, particularly those in churches. The strain of leadership, and expectations on leaders in parishes, led me to search for ways to encourage healthy emotional and spiritual formation for these leaders. My model for spiritual formation describes formation using the metaphor of dance. This model allows for the ebb and flow of our spiritual formation and led me to utilizing the Prayer of Examen as a way of helping leaders become aware of that ebb and flow in their lives. Participants used the Examen for 7 weeks, reflecting on the experience in a journal. Participants became much more aware of the presence of God throughout their day. They also became more aware of their interactions with both God and others the longer they practiced the Examen. This is a wonderful tool in becoming more spiritually aware of the many movements of God throughout one’s lifetime. This is followed by a spiritual formation model (Chapter 3) that helps believers to answer the question Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Along with, “Who do you say that you are?” The model assists believers to explore their responses to these questions. Then a field research project (Chapter 4) is offered that tests the effectiveness of the model through the experience of five participants over a ten-day period. The results of the project found in Chapter 4, points to a more secure attachment to God, self and others which was reported by four out of the five participants. Spiritual direction was well received by all participants. Participants also appreciated the mentoring provided and having the experience of someone listening with them for the movement of the Holy Spirit in their lives. All participants felt they would have benefitted more if the project was longer in length. They suggested a time span of three months. Four of the five participants expressed a desire to continue studying using various components of the project. They stated it provided what was missing in their ability to increase attachment to God, self and others."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133399285497856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:40.156Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:19:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:21:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"61286e84-a451-4b3f-b65d-9b8c41191106","accessControl_ssim":["df21d98a-4d11-4d49-b2f9-680a922d7a42"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Laying a Foundation for Nurturing Experiential Communion with the Word of God for Soul Formation through Journaling and Inner Circle Relationships."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:19:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:58:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["179e1871-1147-4029-93ed-505ab87b3bfe"],"hasLease_ssim":["9ed682a1-0638-4930-814e-a11ebc8cb5bd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Spiritual Formation"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Marilyn Draper D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["Canada"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author’s spiritual autobiography recounts his journey into two-way communion with the Word of God and gives readers opportunities to reflect accordingly. The AESA model (Awareness, Encounter, Surrender, Abide) is presented as a cyclical four-step process designed to help nurture experiential union and spiritual formation. This model incorporates the authors’ own experience, an analysis of how the Word of God is depicted by the Scriptures and in the writings of the Early Church Fathers, four existing contemplative models of formation, and the experiences of those who participated in his research project. The project tested follow up material designed to help people take home and form habits (Contemplative Prayer Journaling and Inner Circle Relationships) that would help them experience union with the Eternal Word of God throughout their day. The project found that these spiritual disciplines can be helpful in nurturing experience union with the Eternal Word of God throughout their day. Two months after the study twelve of the sixteen participants were journaling once a week and nine of the sixteen participants had established some form of weekly inner circle relationship with the desire to be more aware of God’s presence."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133552788635648,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:21:06.548Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:34:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7dbc10a9-3262-4579-9866-984216d2f477","accessControl_ssim":["3d24b8f1-242f-4a10-9a3f-8ad8a58e922c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Shepherd care: how the discipline of spiritual direction facilitates pastors' relationships, their sense of call, and their relationships with congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:34:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:50:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["415760c9-6f14-42b9-8ddf-5674acd1706f"],"hasLease_ssim":["14a0876d-bdb7-4a80-8a8e-a516362ff672"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Floyd Grunau"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sarah P Patterson"],"publisher_tesim":["Tyndale University College and Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Relation (Theology)","Spiritual direction"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Pastors' relationships with God, their calls and their congregations are integral to their ministries. The research indicates that the adoption of interweaving, inclusive and incarnational approaches to missional direction-setting, with emphasis on Scripture-focused listening prayer, can help churches and organizations overcome the divide between 'spiritual' and 'worldly' practices that often hampers planning efforts, and also cultivate learning communities that seek to follow God's direction into God's mission."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133352116355072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:55.172Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
