The hypothesis was that through preaching people can become empowered to participate in social change.  A focus group was formed within the congregation using a pretest and a posttest to test the validity of the hypothesis.  The results of the model revealed that preaching did empower people to become involved in social ministry. This was accomplished by the analysis of a study of seven sermons preached by African American female pastors in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Baltimore Conference, and a workshop which focused on a model to be used for sermon preparation.
