The hypothesis was that through preaching people can become empowered to participate in social change.  A focus group was formed within the congregation using a pretest and a posttest to test the validity of the hypothesis.  The results of the model revealed that preaching did empower people to become involved in social ministry. The acknowledgment of illiteracy is the first step toward the empowerment of African Americans.  The methodologies used to achieve these goals were surveys, pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and qualitative research.  There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment.  At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills.
