The hypothesis was that through preaching people can become empowered to participate in social change.  A focus group was formed within the congregation using a pretest and a posttest to test the validity of the hypothesis.  The results of the model revealed that preaching did empower people to become involved in social ministry. Whereas, persons in our neighborhoods suffer a myriad of social oppressions, the church lacks in her persuasiveness to arrest such evils because oftentimes she too is caught in the deadly clutches of spiritual bondage. A seven-part sermon series, critical reflective workshops, and didactic experiences enabled members of the Christ Cathedral Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan, to actively participate and question self ills.
