Laypersons shared their story personally or through the pastor. The stories were shared using video or live as a cohesive introduction binding the sermon together.  Evaluation of the model was based upon a congregational survey, a personal and a group interview with those sharing. The subjects of gambling and pre-marital sex were addressed.  A control congregation heard only serious messages while a treatment congregation heard only humorous messages on these issues.  A rating scale survey, questionnaire, and focus groups measured the persuasive impact of the sermons.  The humorous sermons were found to be more persuasive. The pastoral concerns addressed through preaching emerged out of the economic crisis occasioned by a rapid decline in the heavy manufacturing industry of the Great Lakes region.  Pastoral care and preaching are brought together when the preacher who proclaims 'God is for us,' offers a vision that leads to growth in grace.  Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. Project Associates and Consulting Faculty assisted the author in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation phases of the project.  Implementation was carried out in a six month period at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Elida, Ohio.  Six case histories were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the materials and counseling sessions. Four sermons on baptism were preached during implementation.
