Church leaders at Campbell African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. participated in an eight-week Bible study on faith, love, and power, and the healing ministry of Jesus and its implications for the church today. Additionally, participants attended a focus group session to outline the healing ministry of the contemporary church. Study results indicate a renewed passion for ministry. The data triangulation methodology included surveys, interviews, and audio/videotape recordings. The researcher discovered that, while a majority had an awareness of the congregation's culture and language, only 40% surveyed understood how culture and language applied to their roles as church leaders. Implementation occurred during a nine-week worship series that connected biblical stories with life stories and prepared parents to expand upon those connections at home while helping their children add pictures and information to scrapbooks. The overall project proved unsuccessful due to sporadic worship attendance and lack of parental follow-up at home. The model is designed to engage church in society in ways which create a more effective church. Through qualitative research and considering the ministries of two illustrious, great African-American preachers, the dissertation demonstrates that congregational involvement in society increases church effectiveness, regardless of whether the style of ministry is priestly, as with Dr. J.H. Jackson, or prophetic, as was that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The creation of an effective church in its fullness is, of course, a long-term assessment. This project examined the problem of the inhospitable attitudes of the church members toward ex-offenders who are returning to society. This education model offered a spiritually designed program provided by prison chaplains for church members to help change their attitudes so they would welcome ex-offenders into the pews. With a welcoming faith community to support ex-offenders upon release the high recidivism rate was addressed. The project span was from May 2006 - December 2006. The methodology included survey questions, interviews and a memoir. The findings revealed that the participants recognized a theological significance in voting. The voter mobilization effort influenced the participants' passion for the community embracing a better quality of life through the power of the vote. The methodology included a survey, preaching and teaching about hospitality, group participant journals and field notes. The findings revealed an increased understanding of the importance and complexity of the practice of hospitality in the church. To empower Christian educators, they participated in ten training sessions learning biblical, theological, and historical information, as well as teaching strategies and learning styles. Christian education is the vehicle used to assist in the faith formation of students as they move towards social action. Methodology used for qualitative data collection included a pre-survey, need assessment, and post-survey. The results affirmed that when teachers are empowered, students transform into Christian disciples who empathize with and prophetically act in the
