Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations.  Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored.  Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. The project included surveys to members, new members and members that seldom participate to discover how they experience the caring ministry of the congregation.  The results disclosed a need to be more intentional in building community.  Leaders are encouraged to engage members and visitors in conversation.  New events were held that focused on relationship building. Leaders are deepening their relationships through the use of check-in questions at regular meetings.  All members are encouraged to be a welcoming presence. More frequent celebration, as a complement to the proclamation of the word, can be supported by the local church today. By such celebration, we will be affirming a biblical, historical and theological mandate, and appropriating an effective means of nourishing faith, encouraging koinonia and enabling ministry.  The project lays out the above mandates and describes an extensive study conducted in one congregation through stages of preparation, execution and evaluation.
