This study explores the importance of symbols expressed in dreams, what may appear as nonsensical spontaneous comments, and uncharacteristic behaviors of patients at the end of life. The workshops are designed to inform and develop skills interpreting symbols to enhanced palliative care. Staff reports indicate the calming benefits that interpreting symbols extend to the dying patient. The researcher uses a model of ministry to lead Lutheran leaders in rostered ministries through a twenty-five hour Sabbath retreat using ample free time, an intentionally home-like setting, a wide variety of practices, and methods of feedback to improve this model for future users. Through the use of two case studies, one medical and one biblical, this thesis explores new ways of thinking through ethical challenges at the bedside. Drawing primarily on H. Richard Niebuhr's theological ethics, virtue ethics, and postmodern analysis, this thesis constructs a contextual, postmodern practical theology of bioethics. It proposes new ministry practices in bioethics. It calls for collaboration among bioethical methods to create a fitting response to challenging situations.
