These chaplains are sustained and enabled by a strong sense of God's providence and by a clear vision of 'calling' understood through a rather literal application of the Ordinal of the Episcopal Church. The project discusses worship among nineteenth-century Episcopalians and the church's place in the antebellum South. The author builds a spirituality of anamnesis (remembrance) from which grows models for Christian education, pastoral care and piety.  He presents research based on the documents of the Episcopal Church, the patristics, and contemporary sacramental and liturgical theology.
