When relationships deepen, personal and community transformation occurs. By extension, the generative hope of a community and its children prosper.The people of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Oxford, North Carolina want to know their neighbors in the perpetually declining, poverty-ridden neighborhoods around the church. This poverty-trap imprisons parents, children, and families without hope of a different future. Our community and its citizens can be so much more than we are; and the faith community offers a unique commodity in this transformation. Jesus Christ calls us beyond our comforting walls to address socio-economic issues that plaque our communities. Through the love of God and deepening relationships, we authentically experience transformation through parity.The faith community cannot accomplish the mission alone. St. Augustine of Hippo directs the citizens of the City of God, temporarily residing in the earthly city (Babylon), to identify the 'common good'. Our Christian commodity is a 'peculiar peace' and love of God, which draws us outward to our neighbor. This project is local, community relationship-building - a partnership between St. Stephen's, Social Services, and the Boys and Girls Club. The church, government, and local stakeholders identify the common good, as we jointly offer and engage practical resources for the parents of children enrolled in club activities. It is not another program; rather a space to grow and learn together with neighbors. The social principles of subsidiarity, sphere sovereignty, and generativity under-gird this faith-based partnership; and qualitative data in the form of surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and interviews highlight the research methods. In the end, the experience of participants is transformative, with new neighborhood partnerships forming, and deepening, holy relationships changing hearts, one-by-one. The outcome is increased non-anxious ordained leadership capacity through change and development in leadership style and skills. The research method is autoenthnographic, includes a 360∞ study of the author's conflict management styles (Leas), and is grounded in the theological questions raised in Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716928665681920,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:11.670Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:33:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:35:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0d569a3b-f993-4c4b-8ad9-84ee8ab6a480","accessControl_ssim":["acfeebfd-ed2f-4b42-b88b-9c1f795ee2b7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["That's so '70s: making feminist hermeneutics relevant for the 21st-century adolescent"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:33:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:29:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["37501a5e-43db-459a-ad5b-d25763b2346b"],"hasLease_ssim":["8a59c478-75d8-45a4-a188-e099a868bdc4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David T Gortner"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Regina A Ballard"],"keyword_tesim":["Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"],"subject_tesim":["Equality","Bible--Criticism, interpretation","Christian education--Philosophy","Feminist criticism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project discusses ways in which students can apply feminist hermeneutics to their study of the Bible. How can communities of faith offer sanctuary to those yearning for it? Learning from monastic communities that help connect individual lives with the Divine by keeping the seven hours, and mingling work and prayer, this project explored the possibility that a modern, accessible retreat could help participants reconnect body, mind, and spirit. In a one-day retreat in an Anglican Cathedral setting, 42 participants, ranging in age from 7 to 86, loosely kept the seven hours and engaged in creative activities: self-directed art projects, needlework, labyrinth walking, illuminating letters, baking, gardening and making rosaries. Participants rated their levels of peacefulness upon arrival and departure, and explored the areas where they had experienced stress during the day, and what they felt led them to a deeper peace. Contained encounters with stress helped participants move to deeper levels of internal peacefulness, as did support and feedback provided through the structure and experience of the event.  Seasonal one day retreats which mingle prayer, creative activity and silence offered in the intrinsic beauty of our churches can help increase inner peace in ways that spill over into daily lives, and can strengthen the ministries of the churches themselves."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719168366346240,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:45:47.615Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":21,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Adrian L Dixon","hits":1,"label":"Adrian L Dixon"},{"value":"Cynthia Byers Walter","hits":1,"label":"Cynthia Byers Walter"},{"value":"Dawna D Wall","hits":1,"label":"Dawna D Wall"},{"value":"Doris Buchanan Johnson","hits":1,"label":"Doris Buchanan Johnson"},{"value":"Duncan H Johnson","hits":1,"label":"Duncan H Johnson"},{"value":"Frieda L Malcolm","hits":1,"label":"Frieda L Malcolm"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Self-evaluation","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Self-evaluation"},{"value":"Feminist theology","hits":1,"label":"Feminist theology"},{"value":"Theology, Anglican","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Anglican"},{"value":"Word and sacrament","hits":1,"label":"Word and sacrament"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Spiritual formation","hits":10,"label":"Spiritual formation"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":6,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Episcopal Church","hits":3,"label":"Episcopal Church"},{"value":"Mission of the church","hits":3,"label":"Mission of the church"},{"value":"Christian life","hits":2,"label":"Christian life"},{"value":"Church growth","hits":2,"label":"Church growth"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":21,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)","hits":18,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"},{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":21,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2013","hits":15,"label":"2013"},{"value":"2012","hits":2,"label":"2012"},{"value":"2014","hits":2,"label":"2014"},{"value":"2017","hits":2,"label":"2017"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":21,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":21,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary","hits":21,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":21,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":2,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":3,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":21,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":false}}}
