The black church was once the social, cultural, and political sanctuary of the black community. Today, in many ways, the black church has distanced herself from the norms and mores of the African American struggle. Her agenda is disconnected. Her programs are irrelevant. Her social engagement is faint and distant. Her influence in the community is extraneous. As a result, black millennials, who represent the largest cohort of African Americans alive today, have waned in their attendance and commitment due to theological and ideological dissonance. Research regarding black Millennial beliefs and behaviors reveal that they have not rejected their faith in God, but they no longer see the church's relevance amid the challenges of everyday life. The resurgence of the Black Church depends on her willingness to engage black millennials by transforming herself into a culture that is loving, accepting, and embracing of the gifts, talents, and diverse nuances of the black millennial generation.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126740542685184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:49.884Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:07:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0112fc6-ce68-4239-bfe7-0f45e89aa757","accessControl_ssim":["ed5306b0-f5f9-4ce9-9b62-498568339ff8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A call to action : identifying and actualizing the social justice voice of the First Baptist Church of Highland Park"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:32:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3dfd0ecb-bf9d-4958-8612-bac7cb7f5952"],"hasLease_ssim":["0f047b98-17f5-491f-a058-68d4aa1c2c71"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C. Pew research reports that 63% of the silent generation (born between 1928 and 1945) identifies with historically black denominations, while only 41% of black millennials (born between 1980 and 2000) say the same. Three-in ten (29%) African Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 claim to be religiously unaffiliated. Considering these statistics, many churches face the danger of extinction due to the lack of entry points promoting consistent engagement among millennials. The pressing issue then becomes how Black Churches as a whole (and more specifically, the Greenforest Community Baptist Church) can create engaging, evangelistic, and empowering entry points for millennials. This project will expound upon Paul’s mission strategy of becoming 'all things to all people, that I might by all means save some” (1 Corinthians 9:19-23 [NSRV]) to serve as a theological framework for establishing evangelistic entry points for millennials into traditional churches.[Note about entry: Abstract submitted to the Atla RIM database on behalf of the author. A review of literature on the ars moriendi tradition reveals common themes of hope, compassion, and patience.
