The author argues in this paper that faithful movements for redemptive social change arise from leaders who were supported, challenged, complimented, and inspired by a community of friends. This paper outlines the condition of loneliness in our culture and among our clergy and congregations, and how an intentional cohort model of support can connect clergy to one another around community issues of importance. In the course of this project the author met with community clergy, researched other cohort models, and attempted to assemble those pastors together. The model adjusted from a 'convening' model toward gatherings centered on an issue. Uniquely, chaplains are employed by both the Department of Defense as well as their ecclesiastical endorsing body. This project is an exploration of the tensions that chaplains experience based on the duality of their authority, citizenship, and commission. Political theology models are used as a framework to guide chaplains through the maze of these tension points.' As most seminaries do not train their students to do this and the Chaplaincy does not teach theology, chaplains are likely to either compromise their own religious commitments or soldiers’ free exercise of religion. A study of their own guidelines for ecumenical cooperation will examine ways in which they can express a lived, visible unity.  Areas of convergence and divergence will be noted.  A case study of a Lutheran/Catholic ecumenical parish will provide a possible model that could be followed. The author studied what parish practices encourage an ecumenical understanding of the faith.  A survey was used to gather data from full communion settings.  The author visited three of these ministry settings, conducted interviews and used case studies to determine which practices promote ecumenical understanding.  Friendship among local pastors, and ecumenical leadership among judicatory officials are formative.
