Originally the thesis question was: what wisdom can be learned from the ways the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church have engaged in debates and made decisions relating to the ordination of women and the ordination of gay and lesbian persons and the interactions of the respective denominations with their global partners? However, as this study has unfolded it became clear that the first question to be addressed is that of how our denominations, in the context of our histories, the social issues and ecclesial issues that have and continue to shape our lives, can come together as we seek to become transformed communities. Therefore this study explores a theological understanding of the democratic polities of the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church and reflects on our movement towards 'life together'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714867312066560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:25.809Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:09:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:46:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"485b039b-3a70-44ad-9c44-7ecd46131197","accessControl_ssim":["c57d84a5-0920-40dd-a4e1-77aebc387a86"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nun like me: a participant-observation study of religious life in the Episcopal Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:09:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:15:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2c577305-9c91-4c31-90c2-b05aec9c6787"],"hasLease_ssim":["d5531c25-d154-4072-a721-5c75a55d884e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Amy Oden"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The study concludes that the twenty-first century may represent an important re-founding period in the history of Episcopal women's religious communities. In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations. As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally. An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment. The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.
